Budget-Friendly Tow Bar Keeps It Simple

Blue Ox Adventurer Adjustable Arms

You don't need to spend a fortune to get a tow bar that's going to work for you. The Blue Ox Adventurer is a simple but sturdy option that is more than capable of getting your vehicle from point A to point B.

Because the arms are adjustable - able to match up to base plates tabs from 16" to 34" apart - you can use this tow bar with almost any vehicle within the weight limit. Adjusting them is easy: loosen the hex nuts attaching them to the coupler and push the arms in or out as needed. Then, when you're not using the Adventurer, the arms can be folded together to take up minimum storage space in your car, garage, or RV.

What You Need to Flat Tow

Flat towing can be a much more convenient way to take your car RVing with you than using a trailer or a tow dolly. It'll save you storage space both at home and at the campsite, and it takes less time and hassle to hook up.

To flat tow your vehicle, there are 5 basic components you're going to need: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a flat tow braking system.

For the RV Between the RV and Towed Car For the Towed Car
Hitch with ball mount and ball Tow bar Base plate
Wiring plug Safety cables Braking system
Wiring adapter cord Wiring kit/diodes

The custom-fit base plate installs on the frame of your toad so you can connect the car to your RV with a tow bar. Hook up safety cables between the vehicles to ensure that the toad does not separate from the motorhome if the tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring syncs your vehicle's signal lights with your motorhome's tail lights, as required by law in most states. Finally, the flat tow braking system - also required in most states - activates the brakes in the toad when you hit the brakes in the RV, making for smoother, safer braking, and preventing wear on your motorhome.

The perfect tow bar for my needs! Thank goodness for Katie at etrailer.com, I'd be lost without her help and advice. A great business with great products and great service.

by:

Product shipped without one of the locking pins which caused me to question the overall quality of the product. I contacted etrailer regarding the missing locking pin and explained that the product was worthless without it and was assured that it would be sent immediately. It was sent out the same day with USPS with a one-week expected delivery! Keep in mind the original order (which was very heavy) was here in a couple of days. Given the major inconvenience, etrailer couldn't spring for some expedited shipping! Sad!

We have used this tow hitch / bar for over 12 months now. We have travelled from the west coast to the east coast, to Canada and Mexico, 10's of thousands of Miles. So much that the connectors to the base plate are starting to wear with all of the turns. The tow bar is still in very good condition. We only have 1 issue which is it can get a bit tight if the car is on an angle, either up or down, left to right. But this was a known issue prior to purchase and its very minor. I would buy again! Great product for the cost.

Wow, that sounds like quite the road trip! What's one place you'd picked to visit again? Also, if you want to let me know what kind of connectors you have, I can see if we have a direct replacement for you.

by:

Solid and easy to handle and adjust. Safety cables are more than a foot too short for this tow bar application. Otherwise you'd have received a 5 star.

by:

There is not a lot of information on the internet about pulling this kind of VW. I did my homework and this works GREAT when pulling a standard transmission with key left in "ON" position. etrailer has a lot of variety to offer for different needs.
This is the lower priced, plain Jane, no frills, less moving parts for something to go wrong - exactly what I was looking for tow bar. With little work it folds up for storage easily. Installation on our '98 diesel VW was clean and easy without incident (I do all my own modifications when needed. There is no rattling loose fit in tight corners or straight a ways. We don't even know we are pulling anything behind our '68 Dodge Travco B210 (modified with 5.9 Cummins)

by:

Fast shipping and very helpful!

Great product

by:

We love you guys, you are excellent from start to finish. Answered all questions products are quality. Will definitely use you again. Katie gets top stars.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Shopping as advertised. Thanks

by:

A very well made product, though way stronger than needed for a Smart Car, though it all went together problem free. It's barely visible on the vehicle which is great, as many are so ugly.

by:

Received my tow bar in excellent condition , amazing packaging . I was a little surprised that it required adjustment prior to use . My jeep already had a Blue Ox base plate installed so it was simple to slide the bar into the adapters . Much less complicated that my old bar . The only disadvantage is there is no way to keep the bar in an upright position . Looking forward to our first trip with it .

No problems whatsoever . One thing that I find interesting is the customer service is amazing. Not only with the tow bar but everything I have purchased .

by:

This tow bar is pretty basic, but that’s what I was looking for. It has performed perfectly, no problems of any sort.

by:

I purchased this tow bar to use with a Blue Ox base plate for my
1999 Mazda Miata. It is a very simple arrangement, with the 2 arms able to fold down to a smaller and more easily stored unit, but does not slide fore and aft as the more expensive tow bars do. As such, it takes a bit more manouvering of the towed vehicle to get it all lined up with the ball hitch. Not a problem for me, as the Miata is very light and easily pushed back and forth. Others with heavier vehicles may have more of an issue.

The quality of the tow bar is excellent. Price and delivery were also excellent. This is a great choice for a budget level tow bar.

by:

Did an excellent towing my 2000 Miatia.

by:

Good product. Did everything I needed it to do. Used it to tow my Jeep. Super easy to hook up to blue ox baseplate. I could barely even notice it back there.. pulled it with my F150. No problems turning. Kept the Jeep under control, even on the Oregon Coast. Another quality product from blue ox. etrailer did a great job helping me out. Customer service was excellent and videos were helpful covering the entire scope of setup and installation. Thank.

by:

Using this Blue Ox Adventurer Tow Bar on my Colorado together with a Blue Ox base plate. Both are a perfect fit and do the job very well. Would buy it again, and yes, I'm very happy with the service I got from etrailer.com. Highly recommended. Ordered it from Canada and had it shipped to the border without problems. Thank you for saving me a lot of money.

by:

Works great on our Mini Cooper S
Connects
with removeable pins, making connections to the RV quick and easy.

by:

Our Blue Ox tow bar is just what we needed to safely tow our PT Cruiser behind our 37 ft diesel pusher. Easy to use.

by:

Worked great fit the jeep that I bought it for

by:

My Blue Ox Tow Bar arrived faster than I expected. It fit the existing mounting brackets on my Jeep Wrangler perfectly. If my oil pump drive gear fails again, it will be easy for someone to tow me home. Now my wife won't worry so much when I'm hunting in the Wyoming mountains.

by:

Very happy with this purchase. I understand this is more of the lower priced Blue Ox tow bars, but it's well built compared to others I've seen in the same price range.

by:

This is a great budget towbar. It was even easier than I expected to hook up to the car and connect to my motorcoach. I am towing a 2015 Honda Fit and I was able to easily pull my car around by hand after hooking it up to this towbar.

by:

Previous review, saying 6 - 8 hours installation, was for the tow bracket that I purchased with this tow bar. It took only a few minutes for this tow bar.

by:

Works perfect.

by:

I have given this product 4 stars because I have not yet used it. However, upon inspection, I found it to be well made and sturdy. I am currently having the tow brackets and cross bar professionally installed.

  • D-Ring Adapter For Blue Ox Tow Bar on Jeep Wrangler
Thanks for that photo, and since you have a bumper with D-ring attachments, you would not need base plates; in fact, base plates wouldn't be able to be installed, so instead you would need a bumper adapter that attaches to the D-ring attachments. Your bumper does need to be rated for flat towing so you'll need to check with the manufacturer to ensure that if you're not certain, but if it is, and if the bumper has a 1" or 7/8" pin hole and the tab is 3/4", 7/8", or 1" then what you will...

  • What Base Plate Can I Use with My Blue Ox Acclaim or Adventurer Towbar on My 2022 Jeep Wrangler?
I have a great base plate solution for you. Since you say that your Blue Ox tow bar has a 5k capacity, I believe you are referring to either the Blue Ox Adventurer Tow Bar - Car Mount - 2" Ball # BX7322 or the Blue Ox Acclaim # BX4330. Unfortunately, we do not currently carry an etrailer baseplate that can be used with either of these models.
